GIBRALTAR (NORTH FRONT) CEMETERY, Gibraltar

Location:

The Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery (also known as Garrison Cemetery) is located next to the airport on the low peninsula off Devils Tower Road and behind St Teresa's Church. West of the cemetery, close to the sea, will be found the Gibraltar Memorial which commemorates, by name, 7 soldiers from the 1914-1918 War and 91 airmen and soldiers who died during the 1939-45 War who were buried at sea.

Historical Information:

The cemetery was used throughout the 1914-1918 War for the burial of sailors and soldiers who died on ships passing Gibraltar, or in the Military Hospital. The 1914-1918 War Graves are scattered in the different divisions of the cemetery. After that war, a Cross of Sacrifice was erected to the West of the cemetery, close to the sea, at the junction of the road into Spain and the Devil's Tower Road. Twenty-three burials belong to H.M.S. "Britannia," sunk by a submarine off Cape Trafalgar on the 9th November, 1918. There are also many graves of merchant sailors who died during the war from natural causes. The majority of the men who lost their lives while at Gibraltar during the 1939-1945 War are buried here. Most of their graves are in two adjacent plots at the northern end of the cemetery, but some are also scattered in other parts. The cemetery is situated on Crown land, and (with the exception of those privately owned) all the War Graves in it are registered in perpetuity in the Commission's name.

GIBRALTAR MEMORIAL, Gibraltar

Location:

The Gibraltar Memorial stands in a triangular site, close to the sea, west of Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery (also known as Garrison Cemetery), which is located next to the airport on the low peninsula between the "Devil's Tower" and the Neutral Ground.

Visiting Information:

It has become necessary to lock the memorial site in the evenings to prevent abuse from drug addicts and drunks. Therefore, the memorial site is kept locked outside normal working hours which are: 08.00 to 16.30.

Historical Information:

The Memorial commemorates, by name, 91 airmen and soldiers who died during the 1939-45 War who were buried at sea. To these names have been added those of seven soldiers of the 1914-1918 War, lost when the S.S. "Woodfield" was captured and sunk by a submarine on 3rd November 1915, forty miles east-south-east of Ceuta. The original memorial to these men, which stood in the North Front Cemetery was demolished. The Gibraltar Memorial stands together with the Cross of Sacrifice erected after the 1914-1918 War. From behind the Cross, which is of Cornish granite, steps lead up to the memorial. It consists of screen walls of local limestone carrying panels of Cornish granite (matching the Cross), upon which the names are carved. They are linked by paved paths and kerbs to a central panel of the same granite bearing the following dedicatory inscription: 1914-1918 1939-1945 THE CROSS IN THIS FORECOURT IS SIMILAR TO THOSE RAISED IN WAR CEMETERIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD IN GRATEFUL AND UNDYING REMEMBRANCE OF THE SACRIFICE MADE BY SAILORS SOLDIERS AND AIRMEN FROM ALL PARTS OF THE COMMONWEALTH WHO DIED DURING TWO WORLD WARS * * * THE OFFICERS AND MEN WHOSE NAMES ARE HONOURED ON THE PANELS NEARBY WERE BURIED AT SEA WITH THEIR COMRADES WHO LIE BURIED IN THE NORTH FRONT CEMETERY AND IN THE JEWISH CEMETERY THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES AT GIBRALTAR WHILE SERVING THEIR COUNTRY.
