ADDOLORATA CEMETERY, Malta

Location:

This Cemetery lies south on the outskirts of the village of Paola and is about 5 kilometres away by road from Valletta. The Cemetery is easily located by following the road signs to the airport. Once in the vicinity of Paola the Cemetery is clearly visible. In the cemetery, the main plot is located by the top gate.

OPENING TIMES: Every day throughout the year: 07.00 to 17.00 hrs.

Historical Information:

A plot on the main avenue (Compartment A, Section EA, Division E) was bought by the War Department during the 1914-1918 War, another plot (D.V.E.) contains further burials. Four of these graves were brought from Lazaretto Cemetery. The cemetery was used again for service burials during the 1939-1945 War. There are 250 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war, 1 of which is unidentified, and 18 of the 1939-45 war commemorated in this site. There are also 46 Foreign National burials here.

 

IMTARFA MILITARY CEMETERY, Malta

Location:

About 1 kilometre to the north east of Mdina is Imtarfa Cemetery, It is 3 kilometres from Mosta and 1 kilometre from Rabat. The Cemetery is signposted in its vicinity.

Historical Information:

There are now 15 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war and 238 of the 1939-45 war commemorated in this site. In addition there is 1 Dutch Foreign National burial and 1,203 non world war burials here

 

MALTA (CAPUCCINI) NAVAL CEMETERY, Malta

Location:

The Cemetery is about 2 kilometres south-east of Rinella, a bay and hamlet opposite Valletta across the mouth of the Grand Harbour and on the southern outskirts of the village of Kalkara. Just before entering Kalkara on the main bus route, the Cemetery is signposted along the road "Triq Santa Liberta" to the street of Triq Santu Rokku" where the Cemetery is located.

Visiting Information:

The cemetery stays open Monday to Friday until dusk, and on weekends and public holidays 08.30 to dusk, but is only staffed at the following times: April - June 06.30 - 16.30 July - September 06.30 - 13.00 October - March 07.00 - 16.00 (except Wednesdays 07.00 - 13.00)

Historical Information:

This cemetery, which once belonged to the Admiralty, is close to a Capuchin monastery from which it takes its name. It is two sections; Protestant and Roman Catholic. There is a triangular 1914-1918 War plot in the Protestant section in which stands a granite Cross of Sacrifice which was erected after that war. Most of the 1939-1945 War graves, too, are in the Protestant Section, in a plot near the entrance, and there is another group in the Roman Catholic section; but there are a few others in scattered positions in this burial ground. There are now 351 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war, 5 of which are unidentified, and there are 694 burials of the 1939-1945 war commemorated in this site. In addition there are 137 Foreign National burials, including 2 unidentified Italians, and a further 1,444 non world war burials.

MALTA MEMORIAL, Malta

Location:

The Malta Memorial is situated in the area of Floriana and is easily identified by the Golden Eagle which surmounts the column. It stands outside the main entrance to Valletta. The Memorial takes the form of a column,15 metres high, of travertine marble from Tivoli in the Sabine Hills near Rome, incised with a light reticulated pattern and surmounted by a gilded bronze eagle two metres high. The column stands on a circular base around which the names are commemorated on bronze panels. A bronze panel at the base of the column itself bears the following inscription: OVER THESE AND NEIGHBOURING LANDS AND SEAS THE AIRMEN WHOSE NAMES ARE RECORDED HERE FELL IN RAID OR SORTIE AND HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE. MALTA GIBRALTAR MEDITERRANEAN ADRIATIC TUNISIA SICILY ITALY YUGOSLAVIA AUSTRIA PROPOSITI INSULA TENAX TENACES VIROS COMMEMORAT The Latin epigram may be rendered in English: AN ISLAND RESOLUTE OF PURPOSE REMEMBERS RESOLUTE MEN.

Historical Information:

The Malta Memorial, built on a site generously provided by the Government of Malta, commemorates those who lost their lives whilst serving with the Commonwealth Air Forces flying from bases in Austria, Italy, Sicily, islands of the Adriatic and Mediterranean, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, West Africa, Yugoslavia and Gibraltar, and who have no known grave. The bravery of the people of the island of Malta between the years 1940 - 1942 was honoured with the unique award of the George Cross.

PEMBROKE MILITARY CEMETERY, Malta

Location:

Pembroke Military Cemetery is located just off the north-east coastal road that runs from Msida through St. Andrews and to St. Paul's Bay, between St. Andrews and what was formerly St. Patrick's Barracks. It is approximately 3 kilometres away from St. Julian's Bay and about 8 kilometres away from St. Paul's Bay. The rear of the Cemetery is clearly visible from this road. Once approaching St. Andrew's (high ridge) it is clearly sign posted.

Historical Information:

The cemetery was begun in 1908 by the military authorities, to serve the garrison. There are 9 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and 315 of the 1939-1945 war commemorated here. 2 of the 1939-1945 burials are unidentified. There are also 269 non world war burials here. Within the cemetery lies the Pembroke Memorial which commemorates 52 servicemen of the 1939-45 War whose graves in other parts of Malta are so situated that permanent maintenance cannot be assured. Their names appear on marble plaques let into the plinth of the Cross of Sacrifice.

PIETA MILITARY CEMETERY, Malta

Location:

The Cemetery is located in Triq id-Duburi (Our Lady of Sorrows Street), 2 kilometres south-west of Valletta on the road to Sliema. On the edge of the Gwardamanga district, the entrance is on Triq II-Principessa Melita, leading to Triq Tal-Pieta and Msida Sea Front and Creek.

Historical Information:

Pieta was the principal garrison cemetery and is laid out in rectangular paved terraces. There are now 1,303, 1914-18 and 166, 1939-45 Commonwealth war casualties commemorated in this site, 1 casualty of the 1914-18 war is unidentified. Of the 1914-1918 graves, five were brought after the Armistice from Lazaretto Cemetery, two from outside Addolorata Cemetery and one from Gozo Cemetery. There is also a tablet erected commemorating 17 Indian servicemen whose bodies were cremated at Lazaretto Cemetery. Also commemorated in this site are 15 Foreign National and 772 non- world war casualties.
