FREETOWN (KING TOM) CEMETERY, Sierra Leone

Location:

Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery is enclosed by the old King Tom Dockyard, now the Police Mechanical Repair Workshop, on the north-eastern shore of King Tom Peninsula. It is about 10 minutes by taxi from the main centre of Freetown to the cemetery area. Located in the Cemetery is the Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery Memorial, which commemorates casualties whose graves in Sierra Leone were deemed unmaintainable.

Historical Information:

The cemetery is a military burial ground by the sea-shore, at the North-West corner of Freetown. It is named from a native chief who ceded land in the peninsula to the British in 1807. It was opened in September, 1917. It contains 129 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war, many of which are due to epidemic sickness in September and October, 1918. There are 248 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war, 2 of which are unidentified. In addition there are 21 Foreign Nationals and a further 136 Non World War Dead of whom 5 are unidentified.

The Memorial, located in Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery, commemorates casualties from both World Wars whose graves in Sierra Leone were deemed unmaintainable. The Memorial commemorates 30 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and 5 of the 1939-1945 war.
