CEMETERY DETAILS

BULAWAYO (ATHLONE) CEMETERY, Zimbabwe

Location:

Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery is a large Civil Cemetery in Bulawayo town. The point to start from is Empire House, the Legion Branch and Headquarters, which is located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Main Street. Drive north along Main Street for a distance of 1 kilometre towards a crossroads where Main Street becomes Athlone Avenue. Continue for a further 2 kilometres and the Civil Cemetery will be found on the right. The Commonwealth War Graves plot, with the Cross of Sacrifice, is easily located within the cemetery.

Historical Information:

Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery belongs to the Town Council. (Here was buried Sir Charles Coghland, the first Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia; but in 1930 he was reburied 43 kilometres away on the Matopo Hills, near the graves of Rhodes and Jameson). There are 7 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and a further 133 of the 1939-1945 war. There are also 24 non world war burials and 6 German burials.

GWERU CEMETERY, Zimbabwe

Location:

The Commonwealth War Graves plot is in the top right hand corner of the Gweru (formerly Gwelo) Civil Cemetery, which is located just beyond a roundabout. To reach this roundabout start from the clock tower situated in the middle of a large crossroads in the middle of the town, and drive west for 12 kilometres. Within the cemetery is the Gweru Cremation Memorial commemorating a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

Historical Information:

There are 86 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war here and 21 non world war burials.

HARARE (PIONEER) CEMETERY, Zimbabwe

Location:

Harare (Pioneer) Cemetery is a large town cemetery in which there are two War Graves Plots, both marked by a Cross of Sacrifice. From Unity Square (town centre) proceed 200 metres on 2nd Street and turn right into Jason Mayo Avenue. Proceed for 2 kilometres keeping to the right, and turn left at the lights into Rotten Row. Proceed for a further 2 kilometres passing over a large flyover. At the crossroads turn right and you will find the entrance to the Cemetery 200 metres further to the right. Also within the War Graves Plot is the Harare Cremation Memorial,

commemorating a member of the Royal Air Force, and the Harare Memorial, commemorating 66 men of the Rhodesia Native Regiment and British South Africa Police.

Historical Information:

There are 27 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and a further 224 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war in this cemetery.
